Kids of Santa Marta / by Kylie Fuentes

One of the things that strike you as walk around the favela is the amount of kids running around. They're everywhere, and we went during what would be regular school hours so it is pretty telling of the attendance rate.

The kids are playing in the footpath, just like you'd see anywhere in the world. Except here the place smalls like the most horrid thing you've ever conjured up, there is piles of junk and filth everywhere, and there are feral cats, dogs and chickens in every corner.

The big thing here though by far, is flying kites. There are literally hundreds of kids on the rooftops of the favelas (and teen boys too) flying these kites so high into the sky they look like planes. They're really talented actually, looks super hard!
