Flashback to Mexico 2009 / by Kylie Fuentes

I have a confession to make. I am a photo hoarder. This is a problem, because when you take the quantity of pics I do, with the file sizes as large as mine are... storage becomes an issue. While I reluctantly make my way through my archives, I got a little inspired by some of the pics I took when travelling through Mexico in late 2009.  And I thought some of you might like to see snippets of this great country. To this day, Mexico is one of the most incredible places I've ever had the pleasure of visiting. These pics don't do it justice, but they're some of my more unexpected Mexican moments.

Take the towering ruins of Chichen Itzá, which at the equinox twice a year, project a show of lights & shadows from the sun on the corner of the pyramid and bring to life a serpent crawling up and down the edges. Not only is this thing a master of ancient architecture, but it is a total scientific wonder. How the hell did they know it was going to do that perfectly at the equinox?! Unbelievable.

Then there's the humble and warm Myan people who welcome you into their communities... as long as you don't steal their soul by taking a picture of them! I made a few mistakes on this front... I should have been more aware of the cultural sensitivities.

Oh, and let's not forget the crazy political protest I witnessed in Taxco, which resulted in a shoot-out between the rebels and the officials. Dramatic, i know. But I did have to take refuge from a crazy gunman in the local convenience store under a Slurpee machine. Not joking. But this is an off the beaten path town, not typical of the tourist traps - so don't be alarmed :) If you can make the trip over, it'll be one you never forget. Such an incredible country, people and culture.

Oh, and get to Tulum and Playa Del Carmen over in the Yucatan if you can. I have never seen more beautiful waterfront in my life. Truly!
